Stop 13. Steinheim Crater. Sandstone quarry exposes a remarkable succession of sandy lake deposits. The sands were very fine and very easily liquified so that many vertebrates were trapped and died in these beds. These sands also are host a very long lineage of gastropods. This lineage is one of the earliest accounts of faunal succession; it predated Darwin's Origin of Species by more than a decade. This was the last stop of the pre-meeting field trip.
