Schott Named Civilian of the Year
By Sherry Cook

One person really can make a difference. Senior marketing major Tracy Schott was recognized earlier this year by the Springfield Fire Department as “Civilian of the Year” because of her efforts to provide smoke alarms to area citizens.

SMSU marketing major Tracy Schott, (center) is honored by fellow employees of Lowe’s as she receives the Springfield Fire Department’s “Civilian of the Year” award.  Inspired by her exposure to community involvement through SMSU classes, Schott, organized a company drive to donate and install smoke alarms to those in need in the Springfield area.

According to the sales major, the idea came to her during the Spring 2003 semester as she listened to Springfield leaders and participated in a community service project as part of Sherry Cook’s Marketing Yourself class. She knew the company she worked for needed someone to develop a local community project and the class provided the impetus to step up and volunteer.

An employee of Lowe’s, a national building materials chain, Schott agreed to head a community service event through a corporate program called “Lowe’s Heroes.” Schott contacted Lowe’s vendors requesting smoke detectors that would be distributed to Springfield citizens. One, the company First Alert, donated 500 detectors. Schott also contacted other area Lowe’s stores and vendors for contributions, pooling enough money to purchase 470 more smoke alarms.

She then got in touch with officials from the Springfield Fire Department to organize a neighborhood distribution. Tracy and other Lowe’s employees, along with area firefighters, canvassed selected Springfield neighborhoods to see if homeowners who did not have a fire alarm would like one installed for free. Says Schott, “The homeowners did not know we were coming, but they were all still delighted to see us. Almost every home we stopped at needed a smoke alarm.”

According to Springfield Fire Department Battalion Chief Douglas Gibson, this is the largest donation ever received for the department’s “Free Smoke Alarm” program.

“The experience was wonderful,” said the SMSU student, “and all the participants enjoyed themselves.” Thanks to Schott, this distribution will become a tradition. Lowe’s plans to help with neighborhood canvasses twice a year now—once in the Spring and once during Fire Prevention week in October.
