By Carissa Hodson

As we enter yet another year, it’s time to once again think about those goals we need to set.  Here’s what the leadership of SMSU’s Marketing Club said when asked their “top” resolutions for 2005. Any bets on whether these resolutions will last until February?

My new year’s resolution is to spend more time with my friends.
   -Laura Angst, Treasurer

My new year’s resolution is to get at least seven hours of sleep a night.
   -Michelle Landuyt, Business Events Coordinator

My new year’s resolution is to use my gym membership enough throughout this year to constitute paying the outrageous amount I did for it!
   - Angel Aston, Vice President

My new year’s resolution is to stop biting my nails.
   -Brian Tedeschi, President

My new year’s resolution is to not be a procrastinator.

-Stephanie Landuyt, Secretary

Principles of Retailing Students "Display" Creativity

For the past 18 years, Dr. Linda Pettijohn has assigned her Principles of Retailing students the task of decorating the second floor display window in Glass Hall. The Principles of Retailing class is broken into groups of three to five students and each group is responsible for selecting a participating retailer. This normally means the window changes 11-12 times each school year.

Some retailers loan the merchandise to the students, while others require students to pay for the merchandise and then refund their money upon the product being returned. Since Dr. Pettijohn has been doing this project for so long, many of the area retailers are very familiar with the assignment and are willing to participate. Each window is graded on its ability to impact the viewer, creativity, attention to detail and an overall rating from the marketing department faculty.

What have been some of the most memorable windows? "One of the first windows was displaying stuffed animals from ToysRUs. A snake was positioned too close to a hot light and someone noticed that the snake was smoking! We had just moved in to the "new" Glass Hall and almost burned the building down!" exclaims Pettijohn.

She also recalls when Bass Pro Shops was featured with an outdoor hunting scene. The "fake" deer had an arrow in its forehead as if it had been struck by the hunter. Many people called and complained about the scene. The group removed the arrow and replaced it with a bandage.

Finally, a local travel agency was featured promoting a fictitious trip to New Orleans with the departmental phone number on the window. Many people called to inquire about the trip.
