Marketing Club Connects
Students With the Community Where would you go to connect to people with marketing positions in the business world? Where would you go to meet other students with similar interests in Marketing? Or how would you get involved in marketing projects to expand your experience?
The Marketing Club at SMSU strives to meet these demands. Every other week throughout the school year, SMSU students join together. One meeting a month features a guest speaker, generally from the local business community; the other meeting focuses on club projects and upcoming events. The executive leadership of the Club consists of President Brian Tedeschi, Vice President Angel Aston, Secretary Stephanie Landuyt, Treasurer Laura Angst, Business Events Coordinator Michelle Landuyt and Social Events Coordinator Kesha Quigg. About fifteen members attend meetings consistently. Dr. Chuck Hermans of the Marketing Department serves as faculty advisor for the Club. President Brian Tedeschi says of the Club’s value to SMS students, “It is an asset to the College of Business to apply real world business applications to the education we learn in class. It’s learning what we learn in class outside the classroom. It gives perspective of ‘How to’ instead of ‘What is.’” An important way the Marketing Club accomplishes the connection between education and actual business world principles is through its professional speakers. Two recent guests were from local advertising agency The Marlin Company and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Tedeschi notes this aspect as his favorite part of the Marketing Club. “I like seeing people learn about marketing and seeing people connect with business people in the community… I like that part because it connects the professional with the educational field.” |
(continued)
The Marketing Club organizes several projects throughout the school year. Members of the club created a brochure marketing the Student Organization Funding Allocation Council (SOFAC) to other student organizations. In December, the Marketing Club partnered with a local radio station to sponsor a mother and daughter for Christmas. During the spring semester, the Marketing Club sponsors their second annual volleyball tournament. All proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House. SMSU’s Marketing Club is a registered member of the American Marketing Association (AMA) as well, so club members also have an opportunity to travel to the upcoming AMA Conference. More speakers from the business community are also anticipated. As their slogan for the year states, the Marketing Club is working hard this school year to provide members an opportunity to “Make Your Mark with the Marketing Club!”
