Logistics Students Venture to Wal-Mart Distribution Center
By Sherry Cook

Traveling to one of the most elaborate grocery distribution centers in the world, 24 Logistics/Supply Chain Management students traveled to Bartlesville, Oklahoma this past November. Attending with the students were Marketing/Logistics faculty, Dr. Carlo Smith and Dr. John Kent.

Owned by Wal-Mart, this center is state-of-the-art and is only one of three like it ever constructed by Wal-Mart. It encompasses almost 900,000 square feet and houses more than 700 employees with hopes to grow to 1500 employees in the future. The dry warehouse is big enough to fit 10.5 football fields. The perishable warehouse is large enough to fit 8.8 football fields inside. The property sits on approximately 150 acres.

The center is so large that the city of Bartlesville built a special highway overpass to serve the center due to the 700 trucks that migrate there every day. The group visited as the retail giant ramped up for the holidays. Graduate student Carissa Hodson commented, “Our trip was an incredible opportunity….It was really great to hear and see how some of the concepts we have been talking about in our classes are applied in an actual business setting.”

Dr. John Kent and Dr. Carlo Smith accompany the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Association on a club trip to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Bartlesville, OK.

Missouri State student Andy Bell who serves as the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Association (LSCMA) president, arranged the trip for club members and other interested students.

As valuable as the trip was to students from an education standpoint, it was also a lot of fun and provided a way for students with similar career interests to get to know one another better. “The van rides there and back were a lot of fun. On the way to Bartlesville, other than Dr. Smith, I was the only American in my van. It was really awesome to hear Thai behind me, Finnish beside me and Spanish in front of me during the trip. Not only was it a Logistics experience for me, it was also a cultural experience!” Hodson observed.
