Meet Marketing's Finest of 2004...
By Mary Chin

Marketing’s
2004 scholarship
recipients are as diverse as they
are similar. Hometowns literally span the globe - ranging from Springfield,
Missouri to as far away as Nairobi, Kenya. These scholarship winners were
asked to respond to a few questions about themselves – favorite TV show,
musical artist, and destination city. And, to add some spice to the typical
questions, they were posed with a few fantasy suppositions such as the ideal
job, which reality television show you would like to participate in, and
where they see themselves in ten years.
How
were the scholars similar? When asked “who is the most influential person in
your life?” the overwhelming response was “a parent.” Another question, “was
there a significant factor that led you to SMS?”, also had a common theme in
the answers – best value for the money. Ah, true marketers from the onset!
Indeed, marketing may be the unifying link among these diverse scholars, but
their ambitions, habits, and dreams make them unique. For a sampling of what
Marketing’s finest aspire to, continue reading…And, congratulations to our
outstanding scholarship winners for 2004.
Lindsey M. Beckman
Ronald Coulter Outstanding Marketing Research Student Scholarship
Lindsey Beckman, a graduate of
Melville
High School in St. Louis, Missouri, majors in marketing
research. When asked ‘why marketing?’ she responds, “It is the most interesting
area in business to
me. As a consumer, I enjoy learning about what makes us make our decisions.”
Beckman’s dream job would be “working in marketing research at Proctor &
Gamble or Anheuser-Busch.” Beckman’s favorite trip? Salzburg, Austria,
which may explain her answer to where she’d like to be in ten years – Europe. Beckman notes that she has no daredevil hobby she
would consider, since she is “fine being conservative.” The one reality show
she would participate in is also her favorite TV show, Real
World.
John Gary Clarke
Springfield / Branson Regional Airport Logistics and Transportation Scholarship
Logistics major John Clarke hails from St. Louis and is a graduate of DeSmet
Jesuit High School. Clarke’s response to his fantasy dream position and
where he sees himself in ten years is one and the same – “in field
management with Burlington Northern Santa Fe in San Diego.” The best place
Clarke has traveled –
Puerto Penasco,
Mexico.
Other favorites include The Dave Chapelle Show (TV), musical artists
– Notorious B.I.G., and Sublime. Clarke’s choice for reality show
participant is Elimidate.
Sarah E. Davison
Dr.
& Mrs. Robin H. Luke Outstanding Student in Marketing Award
Award
winner Sarah Davison is an advertising and promotion major from Wentzville,
Missouri. Davison chose marketing as her major because “I wanted to be
involved in business, and marketing fit my personality the best.” Looking
forward ten years, Davison would “like to be a partner at a corporate law
firm, and happily married with a
Newfoundland
and a Saint Bernard.” Spain is the one place she wants to visit in her
lifetime. Regarding participation in a reality show, Davison’s choice is
Real World with Friends being her favorite TV show.

Marketing research major Elizabeth Henry, is a graduate of Lebanon High
School in Missouri. Henry selected marketing research as her field of study
because “it is the area of business that interests me most and I enjoy it.”
Where Henry would like to be in ten years? “Graduated with my masters and
working in a larger city,” she says. “I would like to go to New York City,
Chicago,
or London. Maybe I’ll be thinking about getting my PhD.” You’ll likely find
Henry watching the TV show The Apprentice and the one daredevil hobby

Scholarship recipient Brooke McDowell majors in sales and sales management
with a minor in international management. A native of Springfield and
graduate from Glendale High School, McDowell has traveled extensively,
recently completing her Spring 2004 semester in London. It is difficult for
McDowell to list a single favorite travel spot; she has experienced several
fabulous places. “I love
London,
the Western Coast of Ireland, and Italy and Germany are wonderful, too.” A
few places she looks forward to visiting in the future include Australia and
New Zealand. McDowell’s fantasy position is “to be the CEO of an
international pharmaceutical or medical device company, or the U.S.
Ambassador to the UK.” In ten years she sees herself as “a successful
business woman, happily married, and maybe with a child or two.” Lastly,
McDowell answers that skydiving is the one daredevil hobby she would like to

Memphis corporate office, or a European equivalent. She also wants to visit
Malta or New Zealand, but her homeland in “South Africa is the most colorful
