Marketing Student Leaves
Her Mark Through Public Service
By Sherry Cook

Jessi
Roper recently donated her time and promotional expertise to the Kitchen
Foundation, Inc.'s Mardi Gras party, Eyes in Disguise. |
Despite taking a full
class load, working part-time and being on the SMS Ad Team this
semester, senior advertising and promotion major Jessica Roper
still had time to “live out” the university’s public affairs mission
this past semester.
Working with marketing
lecturer Sherry Cook, Jessi volunteered to design all the
promotional pieces to publicize a new community event—Eyes in
Disguise, a Mardi Gras party, sponsored by the Kitchen Foundation,
Inc.
The goal of the new
event was to raise enough money to push the Foundation’s endowment over
the $1,000,000 mark by raising at least $50,000. Instead the event
netted more than $134,000. This money ensures funding for the work of
The Kitchen and it’s various projects, for perpetuity.

Promotional pieces created by Jessica Roper
included a save-the-date card, posters, invitations and a corporate
sponsorship packet. |
“Because this was a
February event, we had to finish up a lot of the promotional events
during the holidays,” explained Cook. “I figured Jessi was ready to lop
off my head as I sent her revision after revision on Christmas Eve.
Sponsors kept rolling in, which was a good problem to have, but not when
you’re trying to finalize the piece! Thank goodness for email as she was
in St. Louis and I was in Springfield trying to finish the project.”
“It really didn’t hit
me,” said Jessi, “until I walked into the event and saw my
artwork blown up to banner size all over the room, the number of people
attending, the media and ultimately to learn how much we had raised.”
Plans are already
underway for the 2006 event. And, since Jessi will not graduate until
December and then plans to go the SMS for grad school, Springfield
citizens may see her “touch” on this event for several years to come.

L & T Student, Sandra
Mitchell, Honored
Sandra
Mitchell, a graduate student studying Logistics and Transportation, has
been selected by the Board of Regents of the Eno Transportation Foundation
to participate in the 2005 Leadership Development Conference in Washington,
DC this month.
The conference
will provide a first-hand look at how transportation policy is developed and
implemented. Participants will meet with top government officials, leaders
of associations and members of Congress and their staff to see how
transportation policies are debated, shaped, formed, and ultimately,
applied.
The SMS
Logistics and Transportation Club will help underwrite expenses for the
conference. Says club sponsor John Kent, “This is a
big deal for Sandra and SMS. In the seven years that I have been here, she
is the first to be accepted.”
