Meet Marketing's Baseball Duo
By
Sarah Redinger

The 2003 College World Series was a huge experience for the SMS Bears Baseball Team. Tim Rafferty and Scott Nasby, both marketing majors, had the opportunity to play in this event. Scott says, “Attending the College World Series…was a dream come true and is one of the major factors in why I chose to attend SMS; for the opportunity to play Division I baseball.” Now that longer days and warmer weather have returned, Scott and Tim once again divide their time between Glass Hall and Hammons Field. As they wrap up their last semester, they talk about their baseball experiences and plans for the future…

Scott Nasby grew up in Los Angeles, but has lived in Springfield for the past seven years. His family moved here when his father came to work at SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) Headquarters. He’s played baseball since the age of four, was a baseball letterman at Springfield’s Glendale High School and currently steps in to play as a utility infielder or catcher for the SMS Bears.

As an advertising and promotions major, he admits the balancing act between school and baseball can be rough. His professors have been very understanding, however, and have made the juggle tolerable.

As for Scott’s plans after graduation, he’ll start off with a trip to Europe. “I have never had the time to travel, such as spring break or summer trips because I have always played baseball,” he explains. “This will be the first time I have free time to really travel.” He then intends to open up his own restaurant or work in the field of sports marketing. In 2004, he interned directly under the Vice President of Mandalay Sports Action Entertainment in LA. Among other duties, Scott helped organize and promote current projects as well as those still in development.

"I am a huge fan of the game and will most likely be involved in sports my entire life, whether it be coaching my son's little league games or working with sports teams in the future."

While he won’t be playing baseball professionally after graduation, Scott plans on remaining involved with the sport. He says, “I am a huge fan of the game and will most likely be involved in sports my entire life, whether it be coaching my son’s little league games or working with sports teams in the future.” Having grown up in LA, it’s understandable that Scott’s favorite professional team is the Dodgers.

Tim Rafferty, a St. Louis native, currently plays first base for the Bears. He too has played baseball throughout childhood, joining his first team at age five. The sales management major agrees with Scott that the balancing act can be tough. “I try to get as much school work done when we are in town because finishing homework on the road is a lost cause,” Tim admits. “If we ever get a day off, I like to enjoy it because they are few and far between.”

After he graduates, Tim’s plans are still unclear. He’s managed to fit in some company interviews, as well as complete an internship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car but also contemplates graduate school. Eventually, though, he would

like to go into sales because he feels it’s suitable of his competitive background/personality. He also sees baseball remaining part of his future, coaching grade school kids so they can learn to play the sport at a young age just as he did. And perhaps predictably, Tim's favorite team is his hometown St. Louis Cardinals.

"The whole experience of college and being away from home has really changed me.  It has enabled me to become more independent and I have developed relationships that will last a lifetime."

And what about sharing the limelight with the new baseball arrivals in town, the Springfield Cardinals? Both Scott and Tim express excitement about sharing Hammons Field with the Redbirds. Says Scott, “The people of Springfield are loyal to their sports teams and I think everyone is excited for the season to come around.” Tim adds, “I couldn’t be more excited to have a St. Louis affiliate in Springfield.  I am going to try to make as many games as I can.”

First baseman Tim Rafferty has attended SMS on a 4-year athletic scholarship and has been a MVC honor role athlete.

As for the other big news of the spring, the recent school name change to MSU, both players feel it will be good for the University as well as athletics. Scott predicts the name Missouri State University will positively impact recruiting, scheduling, and the image of the athletics program.

Whatever you call the University, Scott and Tim have both immensely enjoyed their time here. “The whole experience of college and being away from home has really changed me,” says Tim. “It has enabled me to become more independent and I have developed relationships with people that will last a lifetime.”
