Baseball Fever - Brittany Bremer Lives It
By Mary H. Chin

What’s it like to land your dream position fresh out of college? Advertising & Promotion alum Brittany Bremer knows. She’s a life-long Cardinal baseball fan, so when her December 2004 M.B.A. graduation coincided with the inaugural season of Springfield Cardinal Baseball, she was ready.

Was her position as a media relations assistant with this newly organized minor league franchise a shoe-in? Not by any means. As much as timing was her guiding star, it could just as easily prevent this opportunity-come-knocking.

Bremer explains the conflict of opportunity and timing. “I'm actually very fortunate to be working here based on the circumstances I was under at the time. I had already committed to a six-week internship with the St. Louis Cardinals at spring training camp and was scheduled to leave for Jupiter, Florida within the week. It was then that I found out about the public relations job opening with the Springfield Cardinals. I applied even though I was afraid of not being able to start until the beginning of April due to the internship. I feared the spring training camp commitment would cost me the Springfield job."

"There is never a dull moment; everything

about my job is exciting. I have always loved baseball so getting paid to do this work is a

dream come true."

"Luckily, the Springfield Cardinal franchise was gracious enough to let me do the internship while helping them out at the same time. I was involved with finding out what players might be coming to Springfield, getting pictures of the players, doing interviews and writing articles. I felt bad missing out on what was going on here in Springfield, but it worked out for everyone in the end, especially me.”

Bremer describes the camaraderie attached to being with the minor league organization from its inception. “I felt very blessed to be a part of the first season. Everyone was going through it together, even though I was one of the late additions. Being my first real job out of college, you're always somewhat nervous fitting in, trying to learn the ropes. But with this experience, everyone was in the same boat. We had employees who lived in Springfield but maybe didn't have the baseball experience, and we had people who had the experience but had never lived in Springfield, so it was a good mixture of everyone trying to figure it out together.”

The most thrilling element of Bremer’s job is what anyone would suspect – everything! She expounds, “There is never a dull moment; everything about my job is exciting. I have always loved baseball so getting paid to do this work is a dream come true. On several things I'm still learning as I go, such as maintaining the web site, but I'm glad that there's always room for improvement or it would get boring. It's also neat to think that you are watching players who might be in the big leagues and one day I could be saying, ‘hey, I remember when they used to come through our office.’"

So, what exactly does a media relations assistant do? Bremer explains there is hard work involved with the fun. “This position is a public/media relations job, which is often used to describe the same job, but it does possess different duties. The media relations aspect involves writing press releases, game notes for each game, being the liaison between the media and team (arranging player interviews, etc.). The public relations side deals with maximizing the franchise’s exposure and community involvement, whether that's through mascot appearances (I'm in charge of scheduling "Louie"), speaking events, player appearances, or anything else community related.”

Bremer is currently involved with planning season number two and looking forward to what lies ahead. But, one could surmise that occasionally Bremer pauses to do the “pinch test,” just to make sure she’s not dreaming.

"It's also neat to think that you are watching players who might be in the big leagues and one day I could be saying, ‘hey, I remember when they used to come through our office.’"
