Advertising Students
Provide Creative Backbone-Bearline Shuttles Roll Out Fall Semester When Missouri State students come back to campus this fall, they will see the work of several Advanced Advertising students literally rolling across campus. Students in Sherry Cook’s Spring 2006 class took on, as their culminating project, the task of developing a new awareness campaign for the Missouri State Shuttle system. Coinciding with the purchase of brand new shuttles, they were also asked to submit design concepts for the outside appearance of the shuttles and to offer suggested names.
After surveying more than 500 current Missouri State students, teams presented their findings and recommendations to Greg Burris, Vice President of Administration, Gary Snavely, Director of Safety and Transportation, J. Howard Fisk, who contracts with the University to provide the shuttle service, and members of the University’s Office of Publications.
The outcome? Look for the new Missouri State Bearline (the name suggested by two of the student advertising teams) system to roll across campus this fall and view its new design. (University designers worked from student concepts to finalize the design.) The tagline for the new student focused awareness campaign? Jump On! , created by the team of Danielle Heidmann, Kattie Frederick, Leah Franklin, Jeff Sallee, and Ryan Crawford. While this may be one of the more public displays of the Marketing Department’s advertising students’ work, thousands of hours have been contributed by hundreds of students who have provided research and promotional plans for numerous non-profits throughout the Springfield community.

Marketing Students Fly High With
Allegiant Air Since January, Marketing students, Laura Angst, Josey Hedgpeth, and Kelly Masek, have participated in promotions throughout Springfield for Allegiant Air, which features inexpensive flights exclusively to Las Vegas & Orlando. As representatives for the organization, these students create and implement promotions targeted toward college students. Allegiant Air promotions include drawings for roundtrip tickets to Las Vegas, in addition to materials distribution, including Vegas style sunglasses, Allegiant Air post-it notes, and free in-flight drink coupons. The experience of planning and executing these promotions has given these Marketing students a chance to show off their skills-Vegas style. Look for the Allegiant Air representatives at local establishments around Springfield for your chance to hit the jackpot. The Allegiant Air representatives will be at the Springfield Cardinals game on August 23 offering fans a chance to win one of several roundtrip tickets from Allegiant Air. Missouri State University has
Presence in China Missouri State Marketing Faculty, Sherry Cook, Diana Haytko, Nancy Keith, John Kent, Allen Schaefer, and Chuck Hermans put their academic backgrounds to the test as they travel abroad to teach at Missouri State's campus in China. Missouri State has an agreement with Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China for a two year degree completion program. Students in this program take two years of coursework and receive their Associates Degree from the MSU West Plains Campus, then take their final two years of business coursework to obtain Bachelor's degrees in General Business. The first class graduated in July 2006. Marketing professor Dr. Haytko is the COBA program director, and Sherry Cook is in China now, teaching the next cohort. The program has been exciting for the students as well as faculty. Faculty visit key Chinese attractions such as the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, while students learn about western business practices and brand names. “I couldn’t believe that they had never heard of Oprah!,” said Dr. Haytko. So far, Dr. Hermans is the most adept shopper, learning to haggle with sellers to the point of being yelled at by vendors. The only downside for faculty; the 14 hour flight from Chicago to China.
