REFLECTIONS:
By Robin Luke

By now you've got mulch for the garden beds and cleaned out the gutters. The lawn mower got serviced and is now well-used. The boat got cleaned up and has provided enjoyment for you and the family, the corn is about to bear that sweet-sweet taste and your car/camper/RV has been rolling along. You have either visited and/or been visited by many family and friends, and you're just about partied out! Welcome to summer!

For most of the academic family, it’s about time to return to campus. And this year, we have a major change in the administrative philosophy. For the first time in the history of Missouri State University, the top academic leader will be a Provost (not a Vice President of Academic Affairs), and with this position comes the implementation of the “Provost model.”

The other first will be that a lady will fill the second highest position at the University, reporting directly to President NietzelDr. Belinda R. McCarthy, formerly the Dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida, was chosen for the Provost position and she has already begun to make a positive impression on campus. We welcome her and the new administrative protocol.

As for other news, an additional required course, MKT 390 Promotion Management and Implementation, will be part of the advertising curriculum and will be taught by Dr. Sarah Smith, our advertising media specialist. This course completes the development of a comprehensive advertising curriculum.

Dr. Robin Luke loves spending time with his grandchildren, Nate and Rachael Corrine.

Sherry Cook, a valued Lecturer (who has been with us for more than 20 years), has published a series of very entertaining children’s developmental books. They are called “the Quirkles” and you may find out more about this series of 26 books, one for each letter of the alphabet, by visiting www.quirkles.com. The books explore different areas of science while introducing the student to phonics through science. Each letter of the alphabet is a “Quirkle.” There are enjoyable experiments in the back of each book that can be performed at home. The books make terrific gifts for your children, grandchildren and/or libraries. Just think, the next time you see your three year old child or grandchild, they’ll want to define and discuss density (or a myriad of other scientific topics) with you! Take a look. Buy some! Then buy some more!

Since my three grandkids visited during June and July, I just had to let you see them. I am surprised by the mail I have received asking for more grandkid pics. Rachael Corrine turned four months on July 10th and at that time was into 6-9 month clothes! We’re either going to have a Heidi Klum or a shot-putter. Stay tuned.

Please be sure to inform your alumni friends and family how to receive our e-Newsletter (see the bottom of the e-Newsletter site). And please, let us know about recent changes in your life, job, etc.

We look forward to hearing from you! Enjoy!
